Programme Structure & Curriculum

The GNM (General Nursing & Midwifery) diploma is a 3-year full-time programme followed by a compulsory 6-month internship, designed to build theoretical knowledge, clinical skill and professional values in equal measure.

Year-wise Curriculum Overview

Year 1 Foundations of Nursing

Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Behavioural Sciences, Nutrition, Fundamentals of Nursing (theory & practical), and First Aid – building the scientific and procedural base for patient care.

Year 2 Medical-Surgical & Child Health Nursing

Medical-Surgical Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Child Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing-I and Pharmacology, with structured clinical postings in hospital wards.

Year 3 Midwifery & Community Health

Midwifery & Gynaecological Nursing, Community Health Nursing-II, Sociology, Nursing Education and Professional Trends & Adjustment, with postings in labour rooms, OBG and community units.

Internship Supervised Clinical Practice

A 6-month rotational internship across medical, surgical, paediatric, obstetric, psychiatric and community health settings to consolidate independent clinical competence before certification.

Teaching & Learning Methodology

  • Classroom lectures supported by demonstrations, seminars and group discussions.
  • Hands-on practice in the Nursing Skills & Simulation Laboratory before ward postings.
  • Supervised clinical postings at the parent hospital and affiliated healthcare institutions.
  • Community health postings at rural and urban Primary Health Centres.
  • Continuous internal assessment through unit tests, clinical evaluation and case presentations.

Promotion & Certification

  • Students must secure the minimum pass marks prescribed by the Nursing Council in theory, practical and internal assessment for each subject to be promoted to the next year.
  • A minimum percentage of clinical attendance is mandatory for appearing in the final examination of each year.
  • On successful completion of all three years and the internship, students are awarded the GNM Diploma and become eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse & Registered Midwife (RN, RM) with the State Nursing Council.
